STATCOM control strategies in energy-function-based methods for the globally optimal control of renewable sources during transients

The inclusion of large numbers renewable energy sources (RESs) can lead to the operation electric-power systems close their natural stability limits. To improve stability, flexibility and fast control RESs be exploited. However, must “told” what do for sake “common good”. One possibility is apply global based on functions, but this requires appropriate mathematical tools models. In addition “real power feed”, RESs’ converters, among others, offer functionality a static synchronous compensator (STATCOM). Therefore, aim paper was develop functions STATCOM—the ones that consider its strategies limitations—that applied in energy-function-based methods transient-stability assessment improvement. two main contributions derive from developed function (EF). first contribution ability use direct method an EPS includes STATCOMs. second application EF STATCOM RES globally optimal, improvement used as reference other, simpler more applicable strategies. Such has not existed until now. STATCOM’s were additional expressions added already-known system structure-preserving frame. correctness proved by applying them comparison these results with those obtained numerical simulation. Examples reactive current show how transient optimal way local parameters. An example RES’s shows successfully enhancement. seen step towards during transients.
